Egypt Plans Comprehensive Ban on Illegal Online Betting Platforms Through New Legislative Measures

Authorities in Egypt are moving forward with plans to implement a nationwide shutdown targeting online betting applications, as part of new legislation expected to permanently disable illegal gambling services while introducing stricter sanctions for companies that advertise or promote betting activities within the country. The proposed regulatory changes represent a major expansion of enforcement efforts aimed at curbing unauthorized digital gambling operations. Reports indicate that the government is preparing to block access to online betting platforms that have gained popularity in Egypt despite lacking legal authorization, including services such as 1xBet and other similar providers operating outside the country’s regulatory framework.

According to Egypt Independent, officials are preparing to begin technical and regulatory actions to block these applications entirely. The initiative is designed not only to restrict usage but to ensure that once disabled, these gambling platforms will not be permitted to resume operations in Egypt under any circumstances. Authorities view this strategy as essential in addressing what they consider to be the uncontrolled expansion of illegal digital gambling activity throughout the country.

Ahmed Badawy, who serves as head of the Communications and Information Technology Committee within Egypt’s House of Representatives, stated that once gambling applications are shut down, they will not be allowed to resume operations under any circumstances. The planned measures are intended to halt what government officials see as the unchecked growth of illegal online betting services that operate beyond regulatory oversight.

Badawy also confirmed that lawmakers are currently drafting new legislation intended to impose strong deterrent penalties on companies that are involved in promoting or facilitating gambling and betting services. The planned law is specifically designed to eliminate legal gaps that previously allowed certain platforms to continue operating with limited consequences. In addition, the legislation is expected to grant regulators expanded authority to act more quickly and decisively against violations, strengthening enforcement capacity against illegal digital gambling providers.

Officials have emphasized that these regulatory steps are not intended to slow or restrict Egypt’s broader digital transformation efforts.
