Authorities in the United Arab Emirates and Sweden have arrested seven people in a coordinated investigation into an international money laundering network that allegedly handled approximately 70 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to about AED 26.5 million, over a period of ten months.

UAE and Sweden Arrest Seven in Cross-Border Money Laundering Investigation

The suspected leader of the network, a Swedish national, was arrested in the United Arab Emirates after fleeing Sweden. He was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice in connection with suspected money laundering offences. At the same time, Swedish authorities arrested six other suspected members of the network in Sweden. Legal proceedings have been initiated against all seven individuals.

The investigation was conducted through cooperation between Swedish and Emirati authorities, including the exchange of intelligence concerning the network, its members and the suspected leader. Swedish authorities said the operation followed an investigation conducted in Stockholm into the activities of the network.

According to the investigation, the network handled approximately SEK 70 million during the ten-month period. The funds allegedly included cash generated through criminal activity, which was subsequently transferred to other criminal actors. Cryptocurrency was also used to move the value of the funds.

Investigators traced cryptocurrency transactions and analysed digital evidence as part of the investigation. According to authorities, the examination of the cryptocurrency flows identified financial connections to other criminal activities, including serious organised crime. The UAE authorities also reported links to contract killings.

The suspected leader had left Sweden before being located in the UAE. Information exchanged between the two countries was used to establish his location, after which UAE authorities took legal action against him. His simultaneous arrest with the six suspects detained in Sweden formed part of the coordinated operation.

The case involves both physical cash and digital assets. Authorities allege that criminal proceeds were collected in cash and then redirected to other criminal groups, with cryptocurrency transactions used to transfer the value of the funds. The cryptocurrency investigation provided investigators with financial information concerning relationships between the network and other criminal activity.

The approximately SEK 70 million figure represents the value of funds handled by the network during the period identified by investigators. It has been reported as the amount processed by the network rather than as a confirmed amount of criminal proceeds or a final amount subject to forfeiture.

The suspected leader's Interpol Red Notice was issued in connection with suspected money laundering offences in Sweden. An Interpol Red Notice is an international request to locate and provisionally arrest an individual pending extradition or other legal proceedings; it is not an international arrest warrant or a judicial finding of guilt.

The investigation also demonstrates the cross-border nature of the financial activity under examination. The suspected network had links to Sweden while its alleged leader was located in the UAE, requiring cooperation between law enforcement authorities in the two jurisdictions. The operation involved intelligence sharing and coordinated enforcement measures in both countries.

Swedish police said the investigation had established that the network collected cash from criminal activities and transferred it to other criminal actors using cryptocurrency. The investigation into the network's financial activity was supported by tracing of cryptocurrency transactions and analysis of digital evidence.

The case also comes amid continued investigations by Swedish authorities into the use of cryptocurrency by criminal networks. A Swedish police report on crypto exchange providers has documented previous cases in which cash and cryptocurrency were exchanged or transferred on behalf of criminal clients and used in connection with money laundering and other criminal activity. The report includes cases involving millions of Swedish kronor in cash and cryptocurrency transactions.

The current investigation is separate from those earlier cases. The September 2026 operation concerns the network identified by Swedish and Emirati authorities and the seven individuals arrested in connection with it.

The arrests do not constitute final findings of guilt. The individuals are suspects in an ongoing criminal investigation and legal proceedings have been initiated following the coordinated arrests. The allegations concerning money laundering, the movement of criminal proceeds and links to other criminal activities remain subject to the applicable judicial proceedings.
