Macau Expands Casino-Backed Community Shuttle Network to 14 Routes, Extends Program Through Early 2027

Macau is set to broaden its casino concessionaire-supported community shuttle initiative on Friday as authorities continue efforts to encourage tourists to explore neighborhoods beyond the city's integrated resorts and distribute visitor spending more evenly across local communities.

The enhanced program, branded as "Leisure Bus 2.0," introduces four additional direct shuttle routes connecting some of Macau's busiest tourist attractions with residential districts. At the same time, officials have extended the initiative's operation until January 3, 2027. With the expansion, the shuttle network now comprises 14 routes, serving 10 community destinations and two major tourist hubs.

The newly launched services, which are operated by members of Macau's local tourism industry, will provide direct connections from the Ruins of St. Paul's and Rua do Cunha to residential areas including NAPE, Fai Chi Kei, and Iao Hon. According to government figures, the shuttle program has already attracted nearly 20,000 passengers since its pilot phase began on April 25.

The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has worked alongside Macau's six gaming concessionaires, which currently operate the existing 10 shuttle routes, to align bus schedules with the newly introduced services. Under the revised timetable, buses will run from noon until early evening on weekends and public holidays, while additional Friday services will also be provided during July and August to accommodate increased travel demand.

Authorities have also upgraded the program's mobile platform, which now brings together information on almost 400 local merchants to encourage visitors to discover businesses outside the main casino districts. As of July 13, the platform had recorded more than 30,000 views, reflecting growing public interest in the initiative.

Government officials said feedback from the program's initial phase has been generally positive. However, they acknowledged that some residents had previously expressed concerns about the potential effects of increased shuttle operations on traffic congestion and the environment within residential neighborhoods.

Throughout the expansion, the government continues to position the "Leisure Bus 2.0" initiative as part of its broader strategy to channel tourist activity into community districts and support local businesses beyond Macau's major integrated resort developments.
