As one of the European Union’s economic powerhouses, Germany continues to be a prime destination for foreign workers.

Over the past four years, the country has granted a substantial number of work visas to meet the demands of its evolving job market. From the beginning of 2021 to the end of 2024, Germany issued a total of 579,000 work visas to foreign nationals seeking employment.
The data reveal a significant upward trend in the issuance of work visas, with 2021 marking the lowest number and 2024 reaching a record high. In 2021, Germany granted 97,000 work visas. However, as labor shortages intensified, the country saw a notable increase in the following years. By 2022, the number of work visas issued had surged to 152,000, reflecting the growing need for skilled foreign labor.
The trend continued in 2023, with Germany granting 158,000 work visas, and by 2024, the number had climbed further to 172,000—the highest figure recorded in this four-year period. While year-on-year comparisons may suggest a gradual increase, the long-term growth is evident. Germany issued approximately 77 percent more work visas in 2024 compared to 2021, underscoring the rising demand for foreign professionals.
Germany Must Remain a Country of Immigration, Interior Minister Emphasizes
Reflecting on Germany’s migration policy over the past legislative period, the country’s Minister of Interior, Nancy Faeser, expressed satisfaction with the steps taken to attract foreign talent. Minister Faeser highlighted the significant increase in skilled immigration, noting that Germany has witnessed a 77 percent rise in this sector since 2021.
"We have increased skilled immigration by 77 per cent since 2021. Today, we are a country that invests more in integration and is more attractive to talented and qualified workers and skilled workers from all over the world."
The Minister further reinforced Germany’s commitment to being a destination for skilled workers, emphasizing the importance of foreign labor for the country’s long-term economic sustainability.
"Germany is a country of immigration and must remain so," Minister Faeser stated, underlining that attracting skilled workers is vital for the nation’s future viability.
Bureaucratic Hurdles Remain a Challenge for Foreign Workers
Despite the progress made in facilitating skilled immigration, foreign applicants frequently voice concerns regarding the bureaucratic obstacles they encounter during the visa application process. Many workers report that visa processing times remain excessively long, often requiring months of waiting before receiving a response.
While Germany has made substantial strides in attracting foreign talent, addressing these procedural inefficiencies remains a crucial aspect of ensuring that the country remains a competitive and welcoming destination for skilled professionals worldwide.
