German Authorities Raid Suspected Illegal Online Gambling Operation Linked to €5.8 Billion in Stakes

German authorities have conducted coordinated searches against a suspected illegal online gambling operation that allegedly processed more than €5.8 billion in wagers between mid-2021 and the end of 2023.

The operation took place on 11 September 2026 in Frankfurt and the wider Rhine-Main region, with 11 properties searched by more than 100 officers. The investigation was conducted by the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor’s Office together with the Frankfurt tax investigation authorities, the North Rhine-Westphalia State Office for Combating Financial Crime and Frankfurt police.

The investigation had been ongoing for more than three years. Authorities are investigating five suspects who are alleged to have operated online gambling services without the required German authorisation. The suspected activities are alleged to have taken place from July 2021, with the investigation covering gambling stakes of more than €5.8 billion through the end of 2023.

The case also includes an investigation into unpaid gambling-related taxes. German authorities reportedly estimate that the suspected operation caused approximately €77.6 million in tax losses for 2024 alone. The tax investigation formed part of the coordinated enforcement action alongside the criminal investigation into the alleged unlicensed gambling activities.

During the searches, authorities enforced an asset freeze of approximately €82 million. High-value vehicles were seized and several bank accounts were attached as part of the financial measures. One arrest warrant was also executed during the operation.

The scale of the suspected gambling activity is reflected in the value of the stakes identified by investigators. More than €5.8 billion in wagers were allegedly processed during the period under investigation. The figure represents gambling stakes rather than a stated amount of profit or revenue generated by the operators.

The investigation focuses on the provision of online gambling without German authorisation. Germany's regulated online gambling market operates under the country's state gambling framework, under which operators offering gambling services to German customers are subject to licensing and other regulatory requirements. In addition to examining whether gambling was offered without the required permission, authorities are examining whether the associated tax obligations were met. The reported estimated tax loss of €77.6 million relates specifically to 2024.

The searches covered multiple locations rather than a single operating site. Eleven properties in Frankfurt and the surrounding Rhine-Main area were searched during the coordinated action, requiring the participation of more than 100 personnel from the participating law-enforcement and financial-crime authorities.

The financial measures taken during the operation include the approximately €82 million asset arrest, seizure of high-value vehicles and the attachment of bank accounts. These measures form part of the ongoing investigation and do not constitute a final determination that the assets represent criminal proceeds.
