DATA.BET, a provider of sports betting technology and solutions, has released an in-depth analysis of betting activity during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, examining how bettors engaged with the biggest football event in the world.

The tournament became one of the most widely attended football championships in history, drawing 6.8 million spectators across 104 matches held in the three host countries—the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to DATA.BET’s analysis, pre-match betting remained the dominant format throughout the competition, accounting for 63% of total betting turnover. Live betting markets represented the remaining 37%, with this balance staying remarkably stable over the six-week tournament, regardless of the competition stage or the teams involved.
Statistics Markets and the Rise of Advanced Betting Options
DATA.BET’s analysis also highlighted the growing influence of statistics-driven betting markets. These options represented more than 11% of the overall betting volume, demonstrating their increasing role alongside traditional markets.
Among statistical betting categories, Total Corners emerged as the most popular option. It ranked 10th among all markets by betting volume, despite strong competition from major categories such as match result (1×2) and totals markets.
Bettors also continued to embrace more complex wagering strategies through the Bet Builder feature. Many users created detailed combinations that included markets such as corners, yellow cards, team totals, and Anytime Goalscorer selections. Interest in goalscorer markets was particularly influenced by the performances and reputations of elite attacking players, including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane.
At the national team level, France generated the highest betting volume during the tournament. They were followed by other major football powers, including Spain, Argentina, England, and Belgium. Together, these five teams accounted for 36.5% of the total amount wagered, underlining their popularity and strong appeal among bettors worldwide.
Betting Interest Increased During the Knockout Stages
While traditional football powerhouses attracted significant attention, some of the most notable changes in betting activity came from unexpected teams and surprising tournament performances.
Cape Verde became the biggest surprise of the group stage, while Egypt, inspired by Mohamed Salah, produced a memorable campaign and pushed Argentina to the limit in the Round of 16. Their performances generated growing international attention and contributed to a significant increase in betting interest as the tournament progressed.
DATA.BET Head of Sports Yevhenii Ilchenko emphasized the scale of engagement during the event, stating: “The scale was not only visible on the field—it also showed up in our figures. The combined betting volume for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2026 Intel Extreme Masters Cologne Major was split 58.5% to 41.5% in favor of the World Cup.”
Higher Stakes Drive Stronger Betting Activity in Later Rounds
Although the group stage featured a larger number of matches and produced more than 33% additional bets compared with the knockout phase, the two stages generated almost identical turnover levels and attracted nearly the same number of unique bettors.
This indicated that the reduced number of knockout matches carried significantly greater importance, with higher-stakes fixtures matching the overall impact of the larger group-stage schedule.
The difference was also reflected in individual betting behavior. The average wager during the knockout stage was 28% higher than during the group stage, showing that bettors increased their commitment as the competition moved toward its conclusion.
Betting activity continued to rise throughout the tournament, with the semifinals and final producing the highest business volumes of any stage of the championship.
Reflecting on the overall betting landscape, Ilchenko added: “What made this World Cup stand out wasn’t a number—it was how consistently engaged bettors remained for six straight weeks, right up to the final.”
