Ciner Shipping, the largest Turkish shipping company in terms of fleet size, has decided to relocate its operations from Turkey to Greece, citing human resource considerations as a key factor in the move.

Vasilis Papakalodoukas, CEO of Ciner Ship Management, explained the rationale behind the transition, emphasizing the benefits of Athens' skilled workforce. "The company aims to benefit from Athens’ extensive talent pool," he stated in an interview with the maritime news agency TradeWinds. His comments were subsequently picked up by various Turkish media outlets, with Turkiye Today highlighting that Papakalodoukas had "broken his silence regarding the move."
The executive further elaborated on the company’s decision, pointing to Greece's strategic advantages. "The company sought to take advantage of Greece’s abundant human capital and regional advantages," he remarked.
The announcement has sparked significant coverage in Turkish financial media. Reports from February 21 revealed that employees at Ciner Shipping’s Istanbul headquarters were informed that their contracts would be terminated, although no official explanation was provided to them at the time.
This development comes shortly after Ciner Group’s strategic divestment from the Turkish media sector. In December 2024, the conglomerate sold its entire stake in major Turkish media outlets, including Haberturk, Show TV, and Bloomberg HT, to the Turkish conglomerate Can Holding.
The decision to relocate shipping operations aligns with a broader restructuring effort within the company, with Greece emerging as a key hub for its maritime activities.
