Cambodia Readies Nationwide Casino Compliance Reviews to Strengthen Gambling Sector Oversight

Cambodia’s gaming regulator is moving forward with plans to conduct nationwide inspections and evaluations of casinos as part of a broader effort to reinforce oversight and governance of the country’s commercial gambling industry.

According to an official update published on the Commercial Gambling Management Commission of Cambodia (CGMC)’s Facebook page on July 20, officials met to review preparations for the upcoming casino evaluations while also discussing the regulator’s priorities for the second half of 2026.

The meeting was chaired by CGMC Secretary General Yeth Vinel and also focused on preparations for the commission’s strategic plan and long-term vision covering the 2027–2030 period. Although the regulator confirmed that preparations are underway, it did not specify when the nationwide evaluations will commence, how many casinos will be included in the exercise, or the criteria that will be used to assess operators.

The latest discussions build on earlier work carried out this month. In a separate update posted on the CGMC’s official Facebook page, the commission revealed that officials had reviewed the final draft of a casino inspection and assessment project. The meeting also examined measures aimed at strengthening the administration and management of licensing for gaming professionals, reflecting the regulator’s wider efforts to improve standards across the industry.

The planned inspections follow calls made in June by CGMC Chairman Aun Pornmoniroth for government agencies to carry out comprehensive inspections of casino operators to verify that they hold valid licenses, according to the Khmer Times. He also warned that casinos found to be involved in online fraud or other illegal activities could face the revocation of their operating licenses.

The CGMC has yet to provide further details regarding the scope, timeline, or methodology of the nationwide inspection program, but the initiative represents another step in Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight of its commercial gambling sector.
