German law enforcement authorities have frozen 189 bank accounts containing approximately €2 million and arrested four individuals as part of a large-scale investigation into an alleged corporate money laundering network operating across Berlin and Brandenburg.

Berlin Authorities Freeze 189 Accounts and Arrest Four in Major Money Laundering Investigation

The operation, carried out on 14 October, involved coordinated action by police, prosecutors and tax investigators, who conducted searches at 16 residential and commercial properties.

According to investigators, the suspected network allegedly used a combination of companies, nominee identities and complex financial transfers to conceal the individuals exercising actual control over business activities and bank accounts. Authorities stress that the investigation remains ongoing and that no criminal convictions have been secured. The suspects are therefore presumed innocent while proceedings continue.

Four Arrested Following Coordinated Raids

The operation involved around 80 personnel from law enforcement and tax investigation units. Four suspects were arrested: two men aged 31, a 43-year-old man, and a 32-year-old woman. Arrest warrants were subsequently confirmed by an investigating judge at Berlin's Tiergarten District Court.

Investigators believe the alleged network had been operating since 2024. Authorities claim that companies were either created or acquired and that bank accounts were opened using identities that allegedly concealed the real controlling parties. The investigation reportedly involves the suspected use of Portuguese front persons and false personal information.

Authorities have not publicly identified the companies, banks or specific transactions involved.

Hundreds of Accounts Frozen, Millions Secured

Police reported freezing 189 accounts containing approximately €2 million. Officials noted that the frozen amount should not be interpreted as the total value of the alleged scheme or as proven criminal proceeds. The freezes are precautionary measures designed to preserve assets during the investigation and do not constitute a determination that all funds held in the accounts are illicit.

Authorities also emphasised that the number of frozen accounts should not be equated with the number of suspects or businesses that may ultimately face legal action.

Cash, Gold and Luxury Assets Seized

Search teams recovered substantial assets during the raids. Among the items seized were:

  • More than €330,000 in cash.

  • Gold bars valued at approximately €639,000.

  • A diamond estimated to be worth up to €110,000.

  • Luxury watches and jewellery.

  • A Lamborghini.

  • Bank cards and identity documents.

  • Electronic devices and business records.

  • A firearm and ammunition.

Investigators have not yet established the provenance of each seized asset or determined how individual items relate to the suspected financial activity. Those questions remain subject to further investigation and possible future court proceedings.

Allegations of Nominee Structures and False Identities

A central aspect of the case concerns the alleged use of front persons and nominee arrangements for company registration and banking relationships. Investigators suspect that certain individuals were used to obscure the identities of those actually directing corporate activities and controlling financial assets.

The investigation also involves identity-related concerns. Authorities reported recovering passports and identity documents, including some suspected forgeries. However, officials have not stated which documents may have been used in specific account openings, nor have they alleged that all account holders used forged documentation.

The case has highlighted the importance of verifying beneficial ownership and determining who genuinely exercises control over companies and financial relationships rather than relying solely on formal registration records.

Investigators Examine Layered Financial Transfers

Authorities allege that money moved through multiple stages and entities in a manner designed to conceal its origins, destinations or underlying economic purpose. Investigators described the suspected activity as involving successive transfers through interconnected structures, a pattern commonly associated with the "layering" stage of money laundering.

Officials have not published detailed transaction data, disclosed the source offences that may have generated the funds, identified internationally connected payment routes, or named the financial institutions involved. As a result, the exact scale of the alleged operation remains unclear.

Law enforcement believes that examining corporate records, electronic devices, bank cards and other seized evidence may help establish who had practical access to accounts, authorised transactions and exercised operational control over the businesses involved. The results of those examinations have not yet been disclosed.

Potential Payment Services Violations

The investigation also references suspected breaches of Germany's Payment Services Supervision Act. Authorities have not specified which provisions may have been violated, nor have they stated whether any particular business allegedly operated without the required authorisation.

Investigators are continuing to examine the relationship between the alleged corporate structures, financial transfers and any potential payment services activity. No regulatory violations have been proven, and no specific financial institution has been accused of wrongdoing.

Investigation Continues

Authorities described the operation as a significant step in an ongoing probe into suspected money laundering, identity misrepresentation and opaque corporate ownership structures.

Investigators are continuing efforts to identify any additional participants and further define the relationships between the companies, accounts and assets involved.

While the account freezes, arrests and asset seizures represent major developments in the case, prosecutors have emphasised that the allegations remain under investigation and that no judicial findings of guilt have been made.
