UK Launches ETA for Qatari Visitors, Expanding to Gulf States and EU

The United Kingdom is gearing up to introduce the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for visitors from Qatar. The ETA system is scheduled to initiate a trial period starting on October 25, with full implementation set for November 15. This travel authorisation requirement will apply to individuals who do not require a visa to enter the UK. The primary aim of this measure is to bolster the UK's security and border control.

UK Launches ETA for Qatari Visitors, Expanding to Gulf States and EU

During the trial phase, nationals of Qatar will be subject to the ETA requirement. Following this initial phase, the UK intends to expand the ETA scheme to encompass other Gulf states. Nationals of Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE will be mandated to obtain an ETA starting from February 22, 2024. The UK government has also indicated that more countries will be included in the ETA scheme, with European Union member states being among the candidates for future inclusion.

When the ETA system becomes fully operational, those who need an ETA will be granted entry and a stay of up to three months in the UK under the Creative Worker visa concession. Additionally, ETA holders will have the privilege of transiting through the UK.

The application process for obtaining an ETA will be facilitated through the UK ETA app or via the government's official website. The processing time for an ETA application is expected to be relatively efficient, with decisions typically reached within three working days. However, in cases where additional checks are necessary, processing times may extend beyond the standard three days.

While the precise cost of an ETA has yet to be disclosed, it is anticipated to be notably more cost-effective than applying for a traditional visa. Various other countries have already implemented similar systems, obliging travelers who do not require a visa to obtain travel authorization before their trip.

The European Union is also preparing to introduce the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), set to launch in 2025. This system will require nationals of over 60 visa-exempt countries intending to enter the EU to apply for ETIAS authorization before their travels.

This development signifies a broader global trend towards travel authorization systems designed to enhance border security and streamline immigration procedures for both countries and travelers.
